Preparing for Your First Day with IATSE Local 31
Starting your first call with IATSE Local 31 is an exciting step in your career. To ensure a successful first day, it is important to arrive prepared, professional, and ready to work. The following guidelines will help you meet expectations and contribute effectively.
Arrival and Check-In
Arrive early to allow time for parking, locating the proper entrance, and signing in. Always bring a government-issued photo ID, as some venues require it for entry. Upon arrival, immediately report to the Job Steward, check in to obtain your assignment for the day. If you have not completed hiring documents, you will need to provide a photo ID and Social Security card.
Dress Code and Safety Gear
Appropriate attire is required at all times. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory, with safety-toe boots strongly recommended. While it’s not typical to be assigned to a show with a dress code on your first day, you may hear of the following requests:
- Show Blacks: Black shirt, pants, and shoes with minimal logo.
- Dress Blacks: Black Slacks, a Collared button-down shirt, and black dress shoes.
For most calls, show blacks are appropriate.
During labor calls, such as a concert load-in/out or convention work, employees should follow the employer’s dress code. Clothing with offensive language/graphics, rips (Intentional or not), or excessive wear should not be
Be mindful of any accessories or hairstyles that can get caught in machinery, equipment, scenery, or create any other potential safety hazards.
Tools to Bring
Employees should bring a crescent wrench.
For T-Mobile Center Arena a hard hat is required. If you do not have your own hard hat, one will be provided.
For decorating calls, every worker is expected to have available to them a basic tool kit, including a crescent wrench, pliers, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, a utility knife, tape measure, flashlight, JT-21 staplegun and hammer may also be required.
On the Job
Safety and teamwork are priorities. Do not lift more than fifty pounds (one large stage light) without assistance, and always communicate when moving heavy or bulky items. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially during rigging calls when equipment may be moving overhead. Follow instructions from department heads and crew leads, and never hesitate to ask for clarification if needed. Breaks and meals vary by venue, so be prepared to bring food or purchase it nearby.
Payroll Information
Rates of pay vary by employer, and checks may take one to four weeks to process. Paychecks are typically available for pickup at the office on designated days or may be sent via direct deposit, where available. Ensure your paperwork is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
